How to Choose the Right Packaging – Covenant Packaging

corrugated packaging

All boxes are not created equal.

Cardboard. Corrugated. Chipboard. If you thought these types of packaging were the same, it’s time to think again!

We understand that it may be hard to distinguish between the three. In fact, many people use the terminology interchangeably. While it’s true that all are paper-based materials often used in shipping and storage containers, they are actually very different.

Each has unique properties that are important to understand so you can choose the right packaging for your business and its needs. So what are they? Read on to find out.

What is Cardboard?

Cardboard is a general term for any type of heavyweight paper product. You will oftentimes see it used as one component of more extensive packaging, but it is rarely used on its own.

When people think of plain cardboard, the image that usually comes to mind is actually a specific material called boxboard. We’re talking about the tough, thin paper used to make things cereal boxes, toilet paper rolls and other single- (or short-term) use consumer packaging.

On it’s own, cardboard is excellent for small packages that don’t require significant protection. Because it can be laminated, cardboard is also extremely versatile. But when the time comes for big shipments that require bigger protection, cardboard performs best as part of a team.

What is Corrugated Packaging?

Sometimes referred to as container board, or even simply corrugated, these are the powerhouses of packing material…and the medium that helps cardboard shine.

Corrugated pairs sturdy sheets of cardboard with layers of fluting to yield for unmatched durability in transit. Pockets of air above and below the fluted arches add weightless insulation, helping maximize protection while minimizing packaging weight…and freight costs. It is also available in a range of thicknesses to best suit your business needs.

Single walled presses one layer of fluting between two layers of cardboard, making it perfect for contents like shoes, clothing and artwork. Double walled alternates two layers of fluting with three sheets of cardboard and is excellent for moderate weight items such as paint, books or wine. Nobody wants to see those getting broken in transit! Triple walled incorporates a third layer for maximum protection, making it ideal for small motors, auto parts and the like.

The beauty of corrugated is that no matter what protection level your product needs, it can be customized for a perfect fit. Click here for a sampling of the box styles we offer.

What is Chipboard?

Also called paperboard, this versatile material is made by using heat and pressure to fuse wood particles with resin. The result is a rigid, strong third option with a host of different applications.

It is common in packaging and – unlike plain cardboard or corrugated – you have the choice of brown or white. Because chipboard does not have the layers of fluting that corrugated does, it is best for less fragile contents that still need support.

Cosmetics containers are often made from chipboard. It is also a favorite among high-end brands that want to deliver a luxurious unboxing experience. But don’t let that fool you into thinking it is too sophisticated for everyday use. Chipboard is the material of choice for folding cartons, and also as backing material for pads of paper.
